We had a bit of extra time to kill on one of our days in Canberra, and we stumbled across one of the coolest places to visit in this city - the Museum of Australian Democracy! This museum is an amazing place to learn about the history of democracy in Australia, and it's a great spot for kids to learn about how democracy works in our country.
MOAD is situated in the heart of Canberra, on King George Terrace, in the Old Parliament House building. The museum is open every day of the week, except for Christmas Day and Good Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. The Museum of Australian Democracy is a government-funded museum, which means it's completely free to visit. This makes it an excellent option for families on a budget.
We had lunch at the cafe on site - which was excellent (just maybe choose something other than the quinoa wrap). The dining room has a lovely, relaxed and established feel.
We were most impressed by how the museum teaches children about democracy. It offers a variety of interactive and educational exhibits designed specifically for children. For example, the "Play Up" exhibit is a hands-on experience for children aged 0-12, where they can learn about their rights, explore the concept of democracy, and even create their own laws. Our girls LOVED the opportunity to dress up as inspirational characters.
Another great exhibit for kids is the "Behind the Lines" exhibit, which features political cartoons from the past and present. This exhibit is a great way for kids to learn about the importance of satire and how political cartoons can have a powerful impact on society.
In addition to specific exhibits, many of the rooms in the museum are set up as they were in the past and can be toured. Our kids really enjoyed looking at the sort of technology used in old offices, old media rooms and old party rooms.
Overall, the Museum of Australian Democracy is a fantastic place to visit for anyone interested in the history of democracy in Australia, it's the perfect spot for families to learn and have fun at the same time. So, if you're in Canberra, make sure to swing by and check it out!
