Canberra With Kids: Corin Forest

Snowballs at Corin Forest

This activity isn't technically in Canberra, but it's definitely an easy day trip from a Canberra base. Let me tell you about our recent family outing to Corin Forest for some snow play.

As soon as we arrived at Corin Forest, I knew we were in for a treat. The snow-covered trees looked like something out of a postcard, and the crisp air was invigorating. We had booked our toboggans online, so we checked in at the ticket booth and headed up the hill to collect our gear.

We spent a good couple of hours tobogganing, and then building snowmen and having snowball fights in the neighbouring snow play area. The snow is manufactured, so it can become a bit wet and sloppy. It pays to walk to the back of the snow play area to find untouched 'snow' away from the most popular spots.

We took a break and warmed up with some hot cocoa from the onsite cafe. The cafe is small, but it offers a canteen-style kitchen where you can pick what you like and pay at the counter, which our kids enjoyed. There was also a bakery truck on site the day we visited, which was during peak school holidays. After fuelling up and warming up, it was back to the toboggan hill for more fun.

We were really impressed with the facilities at Corin Forest. The staff were friendly and helpful, and maintained safety and order really well. As you can imagine, the toboggan area has the potential to become unsafe, but we found it really well-monitored. The toboggans were in good condition and easy to manage. Plus, there were plenty of other snow-related activities available for those who didn't want to toboggan - like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and a ski school, which we watched for a little while. In the warmer months, they also have a massive slide built into the hill!

We wore regular ski gear, but just gumboots on our feet. If we went again, we'd wear proper snow boots, as our feet did get quite cold at times. If you don't own this gear, or don't want to bother with packing it for your trip to Canberra, it's all available for hire on site.

Booking your Corin Forest snow play adventure is easy. You can either book online through their website or give them a call. They offer a range of packages, including tobogganing, snowshoeing, and even night skiing. Prices vary depending on the activity and the time of day, so make sure to check the website for details.

Getting to Corin Forest from the Canberra CBD is also pretty straightforward. The forest is located about 45 minutes' drive from the city centre, and the route is well-signposted. If you don't have your own car, there are also a few bus companies that offer transport to Corin Forest. Alternatively, you can book a tour that includes transport to and from the forest.

Just a word of caution though, make sure to check the road conditions before you set off. If there's been heavy snowfall, the road to Corin Forest may be closed or require snow chains. So, it's always best to check ahead of time and be prepared.

Overall, we had a fantastic day out at Corin Forest. It was great to get out of the city and enjoy some fresh air and exercise in such a beautiful setting. And let's be honest, who doesn't love acting like a kid again by hurtling down a snowy hill on a toboggan?

If you're looking for a fun winter activity for the whole family, we highly recommend checking out Corin Forest.
